Hey, who doesn’t love giant trucks named “El Toro Loco”, “Grave Digger”, or “Iron Man”?…(If I had a truck it would be named “The Compensator”), with tires big enough to roll over
your average sized city bus and with enough horse power to haul Rosie O’ Donell around the block a couple of times. When we decided to take the trolley to avoid traffic coming into the stadium, we never thought about what it would be like to keep eleven 5 year olds together without losing our minds. It was like herding cats!!!

But once we got there and settled in our seats, it all came together in one huge testoserone filled evening full of head to head races, high flying jumps and of course no evening is complete without at least one or two roll-overs. If you’re really lucky (and we were), you might even get to see a truck explode into flames during the ” free style car crushing competition”, as the rescue crew rushes to get him out before he’s charred in front of 40,000 screaming children!!!

I even surmised that there would be a Jed, Jethro and a Joe-Bill in every direction. Yes they were present as you’ll see in some of the pictures but I could see that most of the folks at this event were just Nine to Fivers spending some time with their families. I think every Dad should have the chance to experience this with their kid. So whether you throw on your leathers on and ride to the stadium, fire up the family Wally Wagon or take your chances on the trolley, The ” Monster Jam”, is a “Monster Must!!! What do you do in your spare time when you’re working in Antarctica maintaining snowmobiles for the U.S. logistics hub and you do mechanical and fabricating work back at home? Well, you could build something out of some of the junk and discards found at the station, like a snow chopper, maybe?

Bob Sawicki and Toby Weisser did just that using the engine and track from a totaled 1981 Ski Doo, bent pipe, a crowbar, whatever would work and except for a couple of odds and ends that cost a grand total of $10, they built what you see here.

The 2 tanks are old fire extinguishers, one now holds fuel and the other compressed air for the refurbished air horn. They say it does 30 to 35 mph on the snow. The build time of about 120 hours makes up most of the cost.

The machine is in the February 2010 issue of Popular Science with a couple of other home made snow machines, but those cost money to build, this just took ingenuity.
